Home Learning Rewards
Twice a term students are rewarded for consistent completion of home learning. Students get to choose from a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities for the whole afternoon. In Te Kakano we had lots of tuakana/teina fun. We learned with each other and from each other.

Learning the Ngai Takoto Whakatauki
Ngai Takoto Whakatauki: He iti marangai, tu ana te pahukahuka, He iti pioke no Rangaunu he au tona.
Small although the pioke may be, great is it's wake as it traverses the might of the Rangaunu Harbour.
Tuakana/Teina
One of our goals in Te Kakano was to learn the Ngai Takoto whakatauki, which is a saying from our local Ngai Takoto iwi. We could not have done this without the expert help from Te Manga students who helped us practise the words and actions. Kia ora koutou Te Manga! Ka pai to mahi! Now we say the whakatauki everyday as part of our morning routine.

We listened to lots of different stories about the Matariki stars. One of our favourites is 'The Seven Kites of Matariki' by Calico McClintok. The students created mini kites and practised their weaving to make the wings. They used sponges to paint a sky background and added wind patterns with a brush. Lastly they sprinkled glitter on for the stars and added a crescent moon. This art work looks amazing.
