Supporting our learning with the iPads

 Today Richard from 'Using Technology Better' taught us to use the camera on our iPads and also to the editing pen to write on photos. We were all very good at listening and following instructions.

Our Place, Our Stories!

In the junior classes we have been learning about the Paparore School pou. 

Below is a photo of our school pou. The pou are wooden carvings that tell us the important stories of the school’s history and the history of the area. Paparore school has been located in three different places. The two early locations were on the east coast. Today our school is located near the west coast.

The Western pou has stories about the west coast.

The Eastern pou has stories about the east coast.

One day we all got to create some different parts of the pou using art and craft materials, play dough, sand, shells and construction materials like blocks, lego and magnetic shapes. Some of us took photos of our creations and made an audio recording telling the story of who or what we had made.

Five little speckled frogs!

Mrs Brydon taught in our class for the day. She introduced us to a new math's song called, 'Five little speckled frogs.' We had lots of fun being frogs and doing 'frog maths.'

We were learning about subtraction. When we take away 1 the number is 1 less. Watch the video and sing along. Get some sticks and leaves from the garden and make a pretend pond. Draw and cut out 5 speckled frogs. Have fun!

Te Kakano class's March Moments to Remember.

 Here are some memorable moments from the last weeks.

Water Fun afternoon because we have been such great students who have shown our five school values of Excellence/Hiranga, Diversity/Rereketanga, Integrity/Ngakau, Community and Partnership/Porihanga and Caring for the Environment/Kaitiakitanga.

Pirate Day!

We have been learning that originally there were no people in Aotearoa New Zealand. First the Maori explorers arrived in their waka and many hundreds of years later people arrived from England in tall ships. Some pakeha people from England did not obey the law and there were wars. An agreement was written so that life would be fair for both Maori and pakeha. This agreement is remembered every year on Waitangi Day. The Treaty of Waitangi is very important to the people of New Zealand. 

 We read a book called 'The Tree Hut Treaty' and talked about solving problems, agreeing and making promises.

We all agreed on some promises for our class and then signed our class treaty.

Term 3 Week 7 2020

 There is no place like SPACE!

Te Kakano students are enjoying their learning about space.

We are learning about each planet, the sun, our moon, day and night, galaxies and constellations. In our classroom we have a Space Station and Rocketship called the Space Explorer NZ. We have turns at putting on the space suit and blasting off to explore the solar system with a friend. Before taking off we have to complete a flight plan and pre-flight check.

Sunday April 5th

Staying at Home and keeping safe

At my house there are just two people; myself and Mr Dane. Of course I have missed all of my students from Te Kakano, the teachers, friends, my mum and dad, my children and grandchildren. However every day I am happy to stay at home because I know it is helping to stop the Covid-19 virus from spreading. You too are doing such a wonderful job keeping safe and healthy at home.

Term 4 Week 6

The Great Waka/Tall Ship Sail-off 2019

Our waka and tall ships were created at home with whanau  as part of our inquiry topic, which focused on where our ancestors came from and how they journeyed to New Zealand. WOW!! We were so impressed with the creativity and originality of the designs and models. Plans were drawn up and we learned a lot about design, flotation, materials and repair. Each one was unique and the students were so proud of their vessels which were tested in the school pool.
