Term 3 Week 1

We are Learners! 

As Te Kakano students returned to school after the holidays and welcomed some new friends into our class whanau there was a lovely sense of belonging and friendship. I was very proud of the way the slightly older students welcomed and cared for the newbies. Great Job displaying the school values Te Kakano!

It was a pretty good week to start school in. There was a new Veterinary Clinic set up for our Learning through Play and we went to the Lion King movie at Te Ahu with Te Pihi and Te Putake classes. Awesome.

We all loved the movie and the delicious popcorn too. We enjoyed the ride on the bus. We sang all the way in and all the way home.

Term 2 Week 10

Celebrating

We began the last day of term with a big classroom clean and sort-out. It was all hands on deck sorting puzzles and other resources. The children worked so well together in small groups, until the tidy-up was finished. FABULOUS TEAM WORK TE KAKANO! 

Fantastic thinking and working together team! This is a really tricky puzzle. 

Mission accomplished, the hardworking students in Te Kakano joined Te Pihi and Te Putake in a Matariki celebration. We remembered all the things we had learnt throughout the term/year and then went into the hall to watch the old 'Lion King' movie. We will compare it with the new one which we will watch at the Te Ahu center in the first week of term 3.  Earlier in the week all of the junior school children used their weaving skills to create a small kete kai [food basket] from paper. At lunch time we had hot chips in our baskets.

Term 2 Week 9

Thank you 'Kids Can'!

This week all the students in Te Kakano received a wonderful gift. The smiles on faces showed how surprised and thankful they were to have a new, warm, water-resistant jacket.

We didn't want to take the jackets off because they were so warm and cozy. We loved the hoods and the cool Warrior's logo.

Junior Kapa Haka

Today Te Putake, Te Pihi and Te Kakano classes [Te Whare Kiwi] took the lead in Friday afternoon's assembly. We sang, acted and presented orally about our learning this term. Our main topics were 'In the Beginning' [Maori creation story], Matariki and 'Who am I, where do I come from?' [school pepeha]. We performed Kapa Haka and were dressed in costumes.

Term 2 Week 8

Thanks to all those parents who turned up for this meeting despite it being a cold winter's night. We appreciated the opportunity to share "more than 100 years of teaching experience" . . . Te Whare Kiwi's Matariki Day

On Wednesday the students from Te Putake, Te Pihi and Te Kakano did their learning together. We had fun learning, creating and sharing. After lunch we all went out to the field area. Some students chose to play their own games with friends, build huts or explore in the gardens and trees. Some students chose to weed and clear the garden so we could have more space to play in the trees without getting hurt. These students had great fun being Kaitiaki. We finished the day with a Junior School Kapa Haka session -  THANKS MRS BRYDON!

The pile of weeds, sticks and unwanted seedlings was huge by the time we had finished. We each carried armfuls of garden waste across the field to a hidden spot to decompose. What a great effort kids! Thanks for your mahi!

Term 2 Week 7

Out of Africa School Disco

Oh what a night! The chilly evening did not stop them coming or dampen the party atmosphere. Disco lights, dancing, laughing and lots and lots of delicious food prepared and served by helpful parents. More than enough money was raised for the junior and middle school classes to attend the new 'Lion King' movie in term 3.
