Term 4 Week 7

 Karakia

This week we have been practising our karakia. We can say the karakia with our class and the students below what to give it a go on their own! Ka pai tamaraki ma.

School Visits

On Friday we had school visits. We had 5 students come to join us for the morning and they did an amazing job settling into their learning and participating with the rest of Te Kakano. Below are some photos of our visitors joining in on GoNoodle.  We look forward to welcoming Brax, Ahinui, Aali, Aria and Tairua at Paparore School.

Term 4 Week 5

 Our First Swim

On Monday we went into the school pool for the first time. It was a little chilly...

First we learnt how to huddle in a group. This is to help us keep warm in the water. 

We used different ways to get in the pool safely. Some choose to use the ladder, others wanted to do a backwards fall into the pool. 

Next we did some kicking to warm ourselves up. 

Lastly, we practiced our safety huddle in the water, as well as learning to float using our life jackets.

Term 4 Week 4

 Water Safe with Whaea Rhonda

On Monday we went into the hall with Te Pihi to hear from Whaea Rhonda and Whaea Nancy. They taught us all about how to be safe in, on and around water. 

Some key points that were covered included:

• Always protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun, and wear sunscreen;
• Always take someone swimming with you that is older than you, preferably someone 18+;
• Only go as deep as your knees when swimming in the ocean or lake;
• When swimming at the beach, always swim between the flags where the lifeguards can see you;
• Look out for rips - If it's white, it is right. If it is green, it is mean.
• Hold you hand up if you are in trouble, DO NOT wave, as this says you are having fun;
• When you are on a boat, make sure you wear a lifejacket and that it is a good fit.

Austen - The lifeguards help people by watching them swim between the flags.

Kyrie - Lifeguards look after people at the beach so they don't drown.

Mila - The lifeguards save people from drowning.

Sophia - I have to wear a life jacket on the boat to be safe.

Patrick - The lifeguards help keep people safe.

Sylvie - I am safe in between the flags at the beach.

Di'Andre - It is safe to stay a little bit closer to the sand.

Thomas - It is fun to swim at the beach but you have to be safe in the water. Put your hand up if you need help.

Jayden - Water safety is when we wear life jackets on the boat.

Isaiah - I need a life jacket on the boat to be safe. The life jacket has a whistle so you can blow it if you need help.

Halo - Water safety is about wearing a life jacket on the boat.

Liam - Water safe is going in the shallow.

Nova - We need a life jacket when we go in a boat because we will drown. Life jackets help you because the life jacket floats. 

Anahera - We need to swim between the flags to be safe. The lifeguards will watch me. 

April - We will need a life jacket on the boat to be safe. It has to fit properly. 

Term 3 Week 9

Junior School Poem Presentations

This week each student in Te Kakano presented their chosen poem to the class. The focus was to introduce the poem, speak clearly and loudly, stand on one spot and look at the audience. The students gave each other polite feedback afterwards. They certainly made their teacher very proud. We have some wonderful orators in the making!! Ka pai to mahi tamariki!

 Here we are, 'Proud and Passionate' leaders of our own learning!

Lovely little seeds who took up the challenge to learn a poem off by heart and to present it to the class. Everyone certainly deserved  their certificates.

This week students at Paparore school also received a lovely warm jacket from Kids Can. Te Kakano students loved their jackets so much that they didn't want to take them off.

Term 3 Week 7 2020

 There is no place like SPACE!

Te Kakano students are enjoying their learning about space.

We are learning about each planet, the sun, our moon, day and night, galaxies and constellations. In our classroom we have a Space Station and Rocketship called the Space Explorer NZ. We have turns at putting on the space suit and blasting off to explore the solar system with a friend. Before taking off we have to complete a flight plan and pre-flight check.
