The word ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. In Te Kakano we learned that ANZAC day is when people in Australia and New Zealand remember the brave soldiers, nurses and doctors who went to war. On this day there are parades and remembrance ceremonies and people wear red poppies. The poppies are a symbol of remembrance for the soldiers who died in World War One. In New Zealand we also bake and eat Anzac biscuits. In the war biscuits were sent to the soldiers who were fighting. We learned that the original Anzac biscuits were very hard and weren't tasty like the yummy biscuits we eat now days.
We had lots of fun baking Anzac biscuits at school. Firstly, we had to identify the ingredients.
Today we created Anzac poppies out of cup cake liners and real poppy seeds. We held the poppies and talked about what we knew about the war and ANZAC Day. Mrs. Dane took some photos and we glued the poppies onto our hands.
